Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour & Employment has claimed that the APC- led government of President Buhari has done more for the lowest class of the country than any other government in the History of Nigeria.
Keyamo said this while speaking on the recently launched Special Public Works Programme in an interview with a Lagos -based radio station, on Monday.
According to the Minister, the Special Public Works Programme which will engage 774,000 Nigerians over three months is for the poorest Nigerians, proving that the current government considers the lowest class.
“People always look at the elite and middle class. They think that only the elite and middle class are entitled to this kind of intervention but we have a lot of intervention for the middle class already.”
The special public works programme is designed to employ 1,000 people from each of the 774 local government areas in the country, who would each be paid N20,000 monthly.
Explaining further, Keyamo said those selected will be tasked with maintaining public infrastructure and doing menial jobs required in their states.
He added that if the programme is successful, “the president might extend it beyond three months depending on how buoyant the economy is or beneficiaries might be migrated into some agricultural programme.”
On the selection process, Keyamo says the Federal Government has done it’s best to ensure transparency in the selection of these Nigerian that will do these work. And these Nigerians will be selected independently by the states.
